São Paulo state under heatwave and low humidity alert
A severe heatwave and low humidity alert has been issued for much of São Paulo state, effective from August 28 to August 31. The Defesa Civil warns that a warm, dry air mass will drive temperatures significantly above seasonal averages. In the northern and northwestern regions, temperatures could reach 40°C, while humidity levels may plummet below 12% during the afternoons.
In the capital, São Paulo, temperatures are expected to range between 30°C and 35°C, potentially breaking historical August records. Other regions, including the Campinas and Rio Preto areas, will also experience intense heat and high thermal discomfort. The dry conditions pose a substantial risk of wildfires and forest fires due to parched vegetation.
Authorities recommend that the population maintains constant hydration, avoids prolonged sun exposure between 10:00 and 16:00, and limits intense physical activities. Special care should be taken for children, the elderly, and animals. To prevent fires, the public is urged not to burn waste or discard cigarette butts in dry areas.
