São Paulo FC ordered to compensate fan injured by falling metal plate

The Court of Justice of São Paulo has ordered São Paulo Futebol Clube to compensate a fan who was struck by a metal plate during a match in May 2025. The 34th Private Law Chamber of the Court upheld a decision requiring the club to pay R$ 10,000 for moral damages and R$ 75 for material damages.

The incident occurred at the Morumbis Stadium during a Copa Libertadores match between São Paulo and Libertad. A metal structure detached from the west stand and struck a spectator, resulting in fractures to the clavicle, shoulder, and arm. The victim was reportedly unable to work for 60 days due to the injuries.

The court ruled that the club's negligence in allowing the structure to detach constituted civil liability. The incident happened in the ground floor sector following a goal, as fans in the upper stands were celebrating by striking the metal structure.
