São Paulo heavy rain triggers building collapses and fatalities

Intense rain that began on Tuesday in São Paulo, Brazil, caused multiple building collapses, flooding and landslides across the city and its metropolitan area.

A three‑storey house in the Cangaíba district, used as a crowded tenement, collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday, killing one man and injuring two others. The incident left 37 residents, including children, homeless; they were taken to emergency shelters by the city's social assistance coordination.

Earlier, heavy downpours caused partial collapses in Cidade Dutra, displacing about 60 people, and led to a fatal drowning in Mirante do Paranapanema. The fire department recorded 14 falling trees, 6 flood incidents and four collapse calls on Tuesday alone, prompting red alerts and safety advisories from civil defense.
