São Paulo implements rent assistance for domestic violence victims

The Government of the State of São Paulo has implemented a rent assistance program to support women victims of domestic violence. Launched in February 2025, the initiative provides an emergency financial payment of R$ 500 to help women relocate from environments where they face aggression to safer locations.

The program currently covers 593 municipalities, representing 91.9% of the state's territory. In the 52 cities that have not yet formally joined the program, women can apply directly through the Secretariat of Social Development (SEDS) via email. Once approved, funds are deposited by the 10th of the following month through Banco do Brasil’s Social Savings structure.

To be eligible, applicants must reside in São Paulo, hold a valid urgent protective measure issued by the Judiciary under the Maria da Penha Law, and demonstrate social vulnerability with a family income not exceeding two minimum wages at the time of separation. The benefit is initially granted for six months and can be extended for an additional six months if the need persists.
