São Paulo issues health alert over venomous animals
The São Paulo State Health Secretariat has issued an alert regarding the risks posed by venomous animals, including spiders, scorpions, and snakes, which are leading causes of medical emergencies in the state.
To ensure rapid response, the government maintains 242 Strategic Antivenom Points (PESAs) distributed across various health units. Officials recommend seeking immediate medical attention following any bite or sting, even if the animal cannot be identified. Providing a clear photograph of the creature can assist in faster diagnosis.
Key medical concerns include:
- Spiders: The armadillo spider (armadeira) and brown spider (aranha-marrom) account for over 10,000 accidents annually. The brown spider is noted for causing intense pain and potential local necrosis. - Scorpions: Species such as the yellow and brown scorpion are common in urban areas, often seeking shelter in drains and electrical boxes. These pose severe risks to children and the elderly. - Snakes: Rainy periods and flooding increase the presence of species like jararaca, rattlesnakes, and coral snakes in both urban and rural settings.
