São Paulo judiciary expands specialized courts and debates civil code overhaul

The São Paulo Bar Association (OAB SP) hosted the state Civil Law Congress, where law professor Flávio Tartuce argued that Brazil’s Civil Code no longer meets the country’s needs and called for comprehensive reform. The event highlighted topics such as digital civil law, contractual autonomy, and the proposed Project 04/2025, noting that the Senate has already conducted 18 public hearings on the matter.

In parallel, the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP) announced a restructuring of its criminal docket, creating three new state courts dedicated to organized crime and money‑laundering cases, plus a specialized “Guarantees” court for investigative phases. The move consolidates roughly 2,885 ongoing actions in the capital, aiming to reduce fragmentation and build expertise in handling complex financial and organized‑crime investigations.
