São Paulo launches electronic system offering up to 40% discount on traffic fines

Since 2023 Brazil’s National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) has operated the Electronic Notification System (SNE) in São Paulo. The platform delivers traffic infractions digitally through the Carteira Digital de Trânsito (CDT) app or the Senatran service portal, allowing motorists to pay fines with a discount of up to 40 %, double the standard 20 % early‑payment reduction. To obtain the maximum discount, drivers must waive the right to file a pre‑emptive defence or appeal, effectively acknowledging the violation and paying the reduced amount by the original due date.

Enrollment is voluntary. Motorists can activate the “Infrações” feature in the CDT app or register via the Senatran portal, after which new citations are sent electronically. The initiative aims to streamline penalty processing, cut costs associated with mailed notices and legal challenges, and further digitise public services for both individuals and companies in Brazil.

The system is part of a broader push to modernise traffic administration, offering a faster, cheaper resolution for drivers while reducing administrative burden on traffic authorities.
