São Paulo launches waste exchange program and Guarujá plans tourist environmental fee

In São Paulo, the 'Mercado do Bem' initiative allows residents to exchange cleaned 'long-life' packaging for Eco Coins. These coins can be redeemed for essential items such as food, hygiene products, toys, and recycled goods. The program, a partnership between the São Paulo City Hall and the Associação Espaço Urbano, has established units in São Mateus and Pinheiros. One Eco Coin corresponds to approximately one kilogram of material, which is roughly equivalent to 35 long-life containers.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Guarujá is preparing to implement an Environmental Preservation Fee (TPA) for visiting vehicles starting in 2027. Based on current reference values, passenger cars will be charged R$ 19.44 per day, while buses and trucks could face fees up to R$ 145.80 per day. The fee is calculated based on the vehicle's stay, with a limit of 15 days per month. Residents of the Baixada Santista region and certain property owners in Guarujá will be exempt from the charge.
