São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes Demolishes Historic Cruz da Esperança Cultural Site

The municipal government of São Paulo, led by Mayor Ricardo Nunes, carried out the demolition of the Cruz da Esperança site on 29 April after a court ordered the reintegration of possession for the planned Parque Municipal Campo de Marte. The space, founded in 1958 and operated by the Grêmio Esportivo Recreativo Cruz da Esperança, was a long‑standing hub for black culture, hosting the Samba do Cruz, amateur football, capoeira and Afro‑Brazilian religious practices.

Activists and local officials, including candidate Jessy Dayane and councilwoman Luna Zarattini, protested the demolition, describing it as an erasure of black heritage and a lack of dialogue with the city. They noted that the community had been seeking historic‑cultural recognition for the site, but the judicial decision prevailed and demolition was completed, with instruments, religious items and furniture removed hurriedly.
