São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes renames municipal guard

São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes has announced plans to rename the Guarda Civil Metropolitana (GCM) to Polícia Municipal. The decision follows the approval of the Public Security PEC (Constitutional Amendment) on November 3, 2026.

The administration intends to update vehicle decals and implement the new identification on upcoming officer uniforms. This move attempts to revive an initiative previously implemented in 2025.

However, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) previously blocked this change in April 2026. Justice Flávio Dino, the rapporteur for the case, ruled that municipalities cannot rename municipal guards to Polícia Municipal or similar terms, stating the change contradicts the Federal Constitution and could cause administrative and institutional inconsistencies.
