São Paulo metro passenger handcuffed following racism allegation

A passenger was handcuffed and restrained by security guards on the Line 4-Yellow of the São Paulo metro on Thursday evening, October 15. The incident occurred at Paulista station and was captured on video by bystanders.

Witnesses reported that the conflict began after the woman and her siblings reacted to an alleged instance of racism involving another passenger. Some reports suggest the tension started when a teenager accidentally bumped into a woman inside a train car. Video footage shows the woman being pressed against the ground by ViaMobilidade security agents.

ViaMobilidade issued a statement confirming a disagreement between customers and stating that security agents intervened to control the situation due to the heightened emotions of those involved. The Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo confirmed that police are investigating the incident. All parties involved were taken to the 78th Police District, where the case was registered as bodily injury and medical examinations were conducted.
