São Paulo Metro to save R$ 12 million annually with solar energy from Piauí

The São Paulo Metro plans to save approximately R$ 12 million annually in electricity costs through a 15-year contract with CGN Brasil and Pontoon Energia. The agreement involves sourcing solar energy generated at the Lagoa do Barro Complex in Piauí.

Supply is scheduled to begin in 2027, initially providing an average of 10 MW, which covers about 20% of the current consumption for Lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red, and 15-Silver. The Metro aims to increase this to 20 MW by 2029, covering 40% of demand. The total projected savings over the contract period is R$ 180 million, driven by lower energy prices, exemption from certain sector charges, and mitigation of risks related to water crises.

To avoid engineering and operational risks, the Metro opted to lease the solar plant's operation rather than taking an equity stake. The selection followed a public call that attracted 30 companies. The energy will be delivered via the National Interconnected System under Free Market energy rules, meaning there is no physical connection between Piauí and São Paulo.
