São Paulo moves Imigrantes toll gantry and adds AI cameras to Rodoanel

The São Paulo state government will relocate the electronic free‑flow toll gantry on the Rodovia dos Imigrantes after complaints from residents of Riacho Grande in São Bernardo do Campo. The gantry, originally installed at km 29, will be shifted a few metres to preserve access to the Billings Reservoir area. Drivers in the affected zone may apply for a temporary fee exemption while the move is completed. The toll system, set to begin operations on 1 August, will split the charge into two R$20.30 payments for the ascent and descent of the mountain range.

Separately, the Rodoanel Mário Covas ring road around São Paulo will be upgraded with an “Rodoanel Seguro” system that includes facial‑recognition and license‑plate‑reading cameras, AI‑driven monitoring of pedestrians, traffic violations and incidents, and 56 km of smart walls in vulnerable sections. The project, overseen by the São Paulo Transport Agency (Artesp) and the Military Highway Police, aims to monitor the 174 km of the beltway. Execution is planned through December 2026 with construction starting in January 2025; the camera network will expand from an initial 30 units to 127 by 2027 and will be integrated with a central police command center.
