São Paulo municipalities adopt sustainable water and waste practices

In the state of São Paulo, Brazil, municipalities are implementing sustainable practices to manage natural resources more effectively. In Araçatuba, residents are increasingly using cisterns to collect rainwater. This practice helps reduce the consumption of treated potable water for non-drinking tasks such as watering plants and washing sidewalks, leading to significant reductions in household water bills.

In Olímpia, the local government has launched an initiative to transform vegetable waste into organic fertilizer. Tree branches and pruning residues collected from over 70 neighborhoods are shredded, reducing their volume by up to 90%. This organic compost is distributed for free to the population and rural producers, where it is used to protect soil and maintain moisture in various crops, such as pitaya plantations.
