São Paulo police cars remain unused as most civilian vehicles age over a decade

More than 20 police technical‑scientific vehicles bearing federal and state logos have been parked for over a month at the Butantã headquarters in São Paulo. Officials say the cars are awaiting registration, documentation, and fleet‑management integration before being deployed to the Santos unit. The delay has sparked a political dispute, with the state governor and the president each claiming credit for the investment.

Separately, the São Paulo traffic authority (Detran‑SP) reported that 72.9% of the state's 15.5 million active vehicles are older than ten years. Only about 3% are brand‑new, while over 32% are more than 20 years old, raising concerns about road safety and emissions.
