Brazilian courts hand down rulings on elections, torture cases and legal publishing

The Tribunal de Justiça de Mato Grosso (TJMT) released the 31st edition of its electronic jurisprudence bulletin, compiling recent decisions across civil, criminal and public law.

The Regional Electoral Court of Mato Grosso denied a request to annul the mandates of Sapezal’s mayor and deputy, while a separate electoral judge dismissed a petition to overturn the election of the mayor and vice‑mayor of Mâncio Lima, finding insufficient evidence of abuse of power.

In penal matters, judges in Acre upheld lengthy prison sentences for three men convicted of kidnapping, torture and attempted execution, and a Mato Grosso appellate magistrate barred the return to prison duties of three officers under investigation for torture, assigning them administrative roles only.

The Superior Tribunal de Justiça confirmed convictions of municipal guards in São Paulo for qualified thefts from butcher shops, and a Mato Grosso civil court ordered a businessman to pay R$ 10,000 in moral damages to a waiter after a bar‑room assault.

Additionally, a court maintained the detention of a colonel accused of femicide.
