São Paulo police target gold theft ring and arrest officers for robbery and rape
Authorities in São Paulo have launched 'Operação Ouro Reverso 2' to dismantle a criminal network specializing in the theft, melting, and illegal resale of gold jewelry. The operation, led by the State Department of Criminal Investigations (Deic), has resulted in the seizure of over R$ 1.5 million in gold and jewelry. The judiciary has also ordered the freezing of approximately R$ 34.6 million in bank accounts linked to the suspects. Investigators have identified a specific area in downtown São Paulo, known as the 'Fire Circle,' where companies allegedly process stolen goods to erase their origins.
In a separate criminal matter, two military police officers were arrested in eastern São Paulo on suspicion of robbing and raping a 17-year-old girl. The victims, including two other youths, had accepted a ride from the off-duty officers after meeting them at a local establishment. One of the suspects, Willian Santana Santos, has denied the allegations of violence and robbery, claiming the sexual encounter was consensual and that he believed the victim was an adult.
Additionally, police arrested four men following a jewelry store robbery in central São Paulo's Praça João Mendes. The operation involved a coordinated pursuit that led to the recovery of stolen items and the arrest of suspects attempting to flee via vehicles and public transport.
