São Paulo police investigate infant deaths at Hospital Salvalus

The São Paulo Civil Police have opened an investigation into the deaths of infants at Hospital e Maternidade Salvalus, located in the Mooca district of São Paulo. While official investigations by the 8th Police District (Brás) are currently focusing on six specific cases, legal representatives for the families claim that at least 36 mothers have lost children at the facility this year.

Families suspect the deaths were caused by hospital-acquired infections, such as sepsis, septic shock, and pneumonia. Investigators are currently reviewing medical records and interviewing healthcare professionals and witnesses to determine if there was negligence or cross-contamination within the hospital environment.

In response, the hospital's operator, Hapvida NotreDame Intermédica, stated that the facility treats the reports with seriousness. The institution noted that over 1,000 children were treated at the unit this year and maintained that the clinical histories of the cases are distinct, with no common infectious origin identified in their internal evaluations so far.

Additionally, the São Paulo Health Surveillance agency has conducted inspections of the neonatal and pediatric units to evaluate hygiene protocols, infection prevention, and assistance indicators.
