São Paulo authorities investigate series of bodies found in metropolitan area

Police in the São Paulo metropolitan area are investigating a series of violent deaths following the discovery of at least 17 bodies since early September. Recent findings include a man found in a car trunk in Itapecerica da Serra with signs of torture, and a 22-year-old man, Jean Victor Sousa Guimarães, whose body was found in the Rio Pequeno neighborhood with his hands tied and head in a black bag.

While the discovery of multiple victims in similar conditions—often wrapped in blankets or plastic bags—has fueled social media speculation regarding a serial killer, the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and the Homicide and Person Protection Department (DHPP) have denied these claims. Authorities state that each case is being investigated individually, noting that the circumstances and motivations appear distinct.

Key investigative lines include links to organized crime, specifically executions attributed to the ‘tribunal do crime’ (crime tribunal) used by factions like the PCC, as well as sexual crimes and drug trafficking. While some suspects have been identified and preventive arrests have been decreed in certain cases, the connection between the various occurrences remains unproven.
