São Paulo Police provide guidance on recovering stolen jewelry
The Civil Police of São Paulo has provided guidance for victims of jewelry theft on how to identify and recover stolen items seized during police operations. In the capital, the State Department of Criminal Investigations (Deic) serves as the primary contact point, located at Avenida Zaki Narchi, 152. Victims can also reach out via telephone at (11) 2224-0741 or (11) 2224-0388, or through email at 3dig.deic@policiacivil.sp.gov.br.
In other parts of the state, victims should contact local or sectional police stations. Recovered items undergo technical analysis by the Criminalistics Institute (IC) for cataloging and identification. To claim ownership, while a purchase invoice is the ideal document, the police also accept alternative proofs such as old photographs of the person wearing the item, social media posts, or bank statements confirming payment.
Authorities emphasize the importance of acting quickly, as criminals often melt down gold and precious metals shortly after a robbery, making identification impossible. Items remain in police custody until judicial processes are finalized; if unclaimed, they may be sent to public auction.
