São Paulo police rescue Moroccan refugee using distress signal

Military Police in São Paulo rescued a Moroccan woman and her baby from a domestic violence situation in the Vila Maria neighborhood. The victim, a member of a refugee family living in Brazil, utilized the international silent distress signal—extending the palm, tucking the thumb, and folding the fingers over it—to communicate her need for help due to a language barrier.

The intervention was prompted by simultaneous reports from the suspect's 13-year-old daughter and a representative from a United Nations humanitarian organization. Because the victim did not speak Portuguese, officers used digital translation tools to understand her situation.

Authorities reported that the suspect appeared agitated and was detained at the scene. The woman was taken to the 4th Women's Defense Police Station (DDM) to register the incident, expressing fear of returning to the residence.
