São Paulo Police officer released after fatal shooting of woman in mental health crisis

A Military Police officer, André Coelho Máximo da Costa, has been granted provisional liberty following a custody hearing after fatally shooting Camila Pereira da Silva, 32, in Pirituba, São Paulo. The incident occurred when the victim, who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis and carrying a knife, approached officers.

While defense attorneys argue the officer acted legitimately and followed all operational protocols, including the use of a body camera, a homicide delegate has characterized the use of force as “manifestly disproportionate.” Investigators noted that the victim did not make an imminent offensive movement at the time of the shot.

This event marks the third death involving Military Police and individuals in mental health crises in São Paulo within a 15-day period. The incident has prompted the Secretary of Public Security to review engagement protocols and consider increasing the acquisition of non-lethal weapons, such as Tasers, to better manage such encounters.
