São Paulo police shooting investigation reveals 12 shots hit young man
An autopsy report has confirmed that 20-year-old Gustavo Muniz de Santana was struck by 12 gunshots during a police encounter in the Moema neighborhood of São Paulo. While initial reports suggested 27 injuries, the forensic report from the Institute of Criminalistics specifies that 12 shots hit the victim, including three to the chest and one to the abdomen, while eight others were glancing blows.
Investigators found that officers discharged a total of 45 rounds during the incident. The Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP) has suspended the four involved officers, three of whom are currently in their probationary period. Both a Military Police inquiry and a civil police investigation have been launched to determine the circumstances of the shooting, which occurred following a suspected mental health crisis.
The victim's family and their lawyer, Ana Facillia Meira, have raised concerns regarding institutional violence. The defense stated that Gustavo had no criminal record and had previously been subjected to aggressive police approaches. The family alleges that despite living in an affluent area, Gustavo was frequently targeted due to racial profiling.
