Brazil police incidents involve fatal shooting and friendly fire

Two separate incidents involving Brazilian police have drawn significant attention. In São Paulo, 20-year-old Gustavo Munis de Santana was shot 27 times by four Military Police officers in the Moema neighborhood. Officers claimed they mistook a cellphone in the young man's hand for a firearm during an intervention following reports of a potential suicide attempt. The officers have been removed from operational duties, and a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) has been opened to investigate the conduct. The Homicide and Person Protection Department (DHPP) was notified of the death nearly six hours after the incident occurred.

In Rio de Janeiro, a subtenente from the Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (BOPE), Glaucio Marcelo Fonseca da Silva, was killed in a suspected friendly fire incident in Jacarepaguá. During a low-light operation in the Gardênia Azul area, officers from the 18º BPM reportedly mistook the BOPE team for criminals, leading to a shootout. The confrontation left five BOPE officers and one officer from the 18º BPM wounded. The Civil Police are investigating the circumstances, and body camera footage has been requested for analysis.
