São Paulo promotes 11,000 police officers, including some under investigation

The government of São Paulo has issued a decree promoting 11,230 civil and scientific police officers. This move, based on a law sanctioned by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas in April, results in automatic promotions for more than 40% of the total workforce in these institutions.

The promotions, which include salary increases and additional benefits, have drawn scrutiny because the list includes officers currently under investigation or imprisoned for serious crimes. Among those promoted is jailer Milton Massaru Nakayama, who is currently detained in a special prison following accusations of participating in the kidnapping and assault of a man in the eastern zone of São Paulo.

The Secretariat of Public Security stated it is verifying information regarding the inclusion of investigated or imprisoned officers in the promotion list.
