São Paulo records lowest August heat spots since 1998

São Paulo recorded 171 heat spots in August 2026, the lowest number for the month since the historical series began in 1998. This figure represents a 65% decrease compared to August 2025 and is 83% below the historical average of 996 occurrences.

The reduction is attributed to a combination of favorable meteorological conditions, including atypical rainfall for the season, and reinforced state government actions. The Government of São Paulo invested over R$ 400 million in monitoring strategies, artificial intelligence, field patrolling, and the maintenance of firebreaks in priority areas such as Conservation Units and Environmental Protection Areas.

While the numbers have dropped significantly from the peak of 3,612 spots in August 2024, authorities emphasize that teams remain mobilized. Monitoring via satellite continues to serve as an alert system for the Environmental Military Police, Fire Department, and Civil Defense through the end of the dry season in October.
