São Paulo reinforces bee protection as honey production exceeds R$ 100 million

The honey production chain in the state of São Paulo exceeded R$ 100 million in value in 2025, according to IBGE data. To support this sector, the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply is implementing various measures to protect pollinators and ensure food security.

Currently, the state maintains over 261,000 hives distributed across approximately 3,000 properties, including apiaries and meliponaries. The State Bee Health Program (PESAb) conducts sanitary inspections, epidemiological diagnostics, and controls the movement of inputs to protect hives from pests, diseases, and pesticide contamination.

Research institutes such as APTA and the Instituto Biológico are conducting advanced studies, including genetic evaluations of native stingless bees like the Jataí to assist in Atlantic Forest recovery. Additionally, the state's traceability and audit systems have received satisfactory recognition from European Union international missions, potentially facilitating increased exports to global markets.
