São Paulo reports surge in childhood mental health hospitalizations

In the state of São Paulo, Brazil, hospitalizations for mental and behavioral disorders among children aged 5 to 9 increased by 98.3% between 2020 and 2025. During the same period, outpatient clinical procedures for this age group rose by 186.1%, totaling 1.19 million appointments in 2025, according to the São Paulo State Health Secretariat.

While experts suggest this rise may reflect improved access to services and previously unmet demand, the trend has prompted educational initiatives. The 'Arte na Travessia' project, developed by Evoluir and sponsored by Novelis, was launched in Pindamonhangaba to address socio-emotional development. The program uses various artistic languages to teach self-knowledge, empathy, cooperation, and critical thinking to help students navigate social and emotional challenges.
