São Paulo retiree loses R$ 294,000 in romance scam involving BTS member Jimin
A 68-year-old retiree in São Paulo, Brazil, lost approximately R$ 294,000 in a romance scam involving an individual impersonating Park Jimin, a member of the South Korean K-pop group BTS.
The scam lasted roughly four months, beginning when the victim received messages from an unknown sender claiming to be the singer seeking a discreet relationship. The perpetrator used romantic declarations and promised luxury gifts, including designer bags, jewelry, and over R$ 700,000 in USD, to build trust.
To receive the promised items, the victim was told she must pay various shipping and carrier fees. After making several transfers and even taking out loans to cover the costs, the victim continued to face new demands for money. The scammer reportedly used affectionate language and nicknames to maintain the illusion of a real relationship.
