São Paulo shootings underscore surge in urban violence

A 30‑year‑old man was shot in the leg after chasing a robbery suspect through the Capão Redondo neighbourhood of São Paulo on Sunday. Police say he collided with the suspect’s motorcycle before the assailant opened fire. The victim was taken to hospital and the suspect fled, prompting increased police patrols in the area.

In a separate incident on 7 July, businessman Victor Hugo Fabotti Delgado was fatally shot in the head during a heated commercial dispute at a warehouse in the industrial district of Arujá, Greater São Paulo. Witnesses called for help and the victim was rushed to Hospital Ipiranga, where he died. The alleged shooter escaped in a pickup truck and police are conducting investigations to locate him. Both cases illustrate a worrying rise in gun‑related crime in São Paulo and have spurred calls for stronger security measures.
