São Paulo State Boosts Payments for Cardiac Surgeries up to Triple Federal Rate

The São Paulo state government has introduced the Tabela SUS Paulista, a reimbursement scheme that can pay up to three times the federal SUS rates for cardiac surgeries performed by charitable and municipal hospitals. Under the new scheme, the payment for procedures such as correction of tetralogy of Fallot rises from R$ 22,400 to R$ 70,700, coronary angioplasty with stent placement from R$ 1,900 to R$ 6,200, and atrial fibrillation ablation from R$ 8,200 to R$ 25,900. The state has allocated more than R$ 10 billion to roughly 800 institutions, helping reactivate 8,400 hospital beds and enabling about 3.5 million surgeries, with elective procedures increasing from 700 000 in 2022 to 1.3 million in 2025. The program, initially for philanthropic entities, was extended in May to over 100 municipal hospitals in about 70 cities, with additional funds paid by the state treasury for each procedure performed.
