São Paulo state hit by severe storms and widespread flooding

Severe storms and heavy rainfall have caused widespread damage across the state of São Paulo, Brazil, resulting in flooding, landslides, and fallen trees. In the capital, significant flooding occurred in the Anhangabaú Tunnel and the Liberdade metro station, while the Ibirapuera Park lake overflowed. Local authorities reported that the lack of permeable soil in urban areas has exacerbated the impact of these extreme weather events.

In the interior and coastal regions, several municipalities reported damage. Presidente Prudente experienced a landslide near Avenida Miguel Damha that broke a water pipe. In São Luiz do Paraitinga, an electrical discharge caused the death of eight bovines. Other affected areas include São Sebastião, Itapevi, Jundiaí, and Paulicéia, where landslides and erosion impacted roads and bridges.

Despite the extensive damage to infrastructure and property, the State Civil Defense has reported no human casualties from the recent storms. The Civil Defense issued multiple preventive alerts across various regions, including the metropolitan area and the coast, as weather instability is expected to persist.
