Shopping Sheik inauguration causes chaos in São Paulo's Brás

The inauguration of Shopping Sheik in the Brás district of São Paulo turned into chaos after the store advertised products priced between R$ 1 and R$ 20, including 32-inch televisions for R$ 20. The massive crowd caused queues to stretch as far as Avenida do Estado, with some customers reportedly waiting for up to three days.

The situation escalated into a public disturbance, prompting the Military Police and the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) to intervene. Police had to block streets, divert bus lines, and use pepper spray to control the crowd. Reports indicated that some people fainted due to the congestion, and a bus stop was damaged during the unrest. The store owner, known as ‘Sheik do Preço Único’, apologized to customers and neighbors, stating that the event exceeded his planned capacity of 500 people.

Following the incident, the police temporarily closed the establishment and prohibited similar flash promotions. The store reopened in an organized manner on Tuesday, though the owner stated that the extreme R$ 20 television promotion would not be repeated.
