São Paulo records heaviest September rainfall since 1943
São Paulo is experiencing its rainiest September since 1943, with rainfall levels in the capital reaching 253.8 mm at the Mirante de Santana station—three times the monthly average of 83.3 mm. The extreme weather, attributed by the State Civil Defense to the El Niño phenomenon, has caused significant damage across the state.
In the capital, a 12-story residential building under construction collapsed in the Penha neighborhood, resulting in several deaths, including members of a Bolivian family. Other fatalities and disappearances have been reported in municipalities such as Jandira and Itaquaquecetuba due to flash floods and currents.
In the Vale do Ribeira region, the Ribeira de Iguape River rose nearly nine meters, forcing dozens of families to evacuate and leaving many others displaced. The state government has declared emergencies in several municipalities and deployed humanitarian aid, including boats and helicopters, to assist affected communities.
Despite the destruction, the heavy rains have positively impacted water security, with Sabesp reporting a 9% increase in reservoir levels across the Metropolitan Region, helping to mitigate previous water scarcity concerns.
