São Paulo AI‑Powered Traffic Cameras Flag Over 7,000 Infractions

Artificial‑intelligence cameras installed on São Paulo’s highways have begun automatically detecting traffic violations. In test runs on the Rodoanel Mario Covas (south and east stretches) and on the Raposo Tavares road, the systems captured more than 7 000 infractions within a month, averaging 150‑170 violations per day. The most frequent breaches were failure to wear a seat belt (about 45‑50 % of detections) and the use of a mobile phone while driving (roughly 20 %).

The cameras record high‑resolution images, which are forwarded to the Military Road Police for human validation before any fine is issued. The pilot phase ran from May to June 2026; enforcement of the recorded violations started in July 2026. Operators such as SPMar and Ecovias say the technology also flags stopped vehicles, trucks in restricted lanes and other safety hazards, with the aim of reducing accidents and improving road safety across the state.
