São Paulo woman arrested for alleged killing of daughter-in-law

A 68-year-old woman was arrested in the Vila Verde neighborhood of eastern São Paulo after allegedly killing her 54-year-old daughter-in-law, Marilu de Jesus dos Santos, with a knife.

The victim was transported to Hospital Ermelino Matarazzo but succumbed to her injuries. Police recovered the weapon, which the suspect claimed was a knife previously used to peel oranges, from a kitchen sink with bloodstains.

The suspect told authorities she acted in self-defense, claiming she was being attacked by the victim during an argument. According to the suspect, the victim had been consuming alcohol and exhibiting aggressive behavior. Family members noted that while the victim struggled with alcoholism, their relationship was typically peaceful when she was not drinking. The victim and her husband had moved into the residence approximately one month prior to assist the suspect, who uses a walker following a femur fracture.
