São Paulo Zoo launches public poll to name maned wolf cubs

The São Paulo Zoo has opened an online poll for the public to choose names for three two‑month‑old maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) cubs – two females and one male. The cubs are the second litter of rescued parents Pitanga and Caju, both part of the zoo’s conservation program in partnership with the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the National Action Plan for Canid Conservation (PAN Canídeos) and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums of Brazil (AZAB).

Voters can select from four name sets inspired by Brazilian biodiversity: Araçá, Açaí and Buriti; Açaí, Guaraná and Cupuaçu; Castanha, Baru and Amendoim; or Cajá, Pequi and Murici. The poll runs on the zoo’s Instagram account (@zoosaopaulo) and the winning combination will be announced after voting closes. The maned wolf is classified as Vulnerable, facing threats such as habitat loss, road collisions, wildfires and human conflict.
