São Paulo's Historic Center Celebrates 40 Years of Museum Collaboration

São Paulo’s downtown hosts one of Brazil’s largest concentrations of cultural venues, including museums, theatres, libraries and public archives that have shaped the city since the 19th‑century coffee boom. Urbanist Rodrigo Iacovini said the area “is called the centre for a reason… it is where the city began and where novelty radiated.”

In July, the State Museum System (SISEM) marked its 40th anniversary at Sesc Bom Retiro. The event gathered museum managers, researchers and cultural officials from across São Paulo to discuss the future of the sector and to advance the State Museum Plan. Secretary Marilia Marton emphasized that museums “are essential spaces for memory, knowledge and citizenship,” and highlighted the plan’s role in strengthening public cultural policy and networks.

The celebration underscored the historic centre’s ongoing relevance as a hub for cultural production and as a catalyst for coordinated museum development throughout the state.
