São Paulo's Quarta Parada Cemetery Indigenous Urn Discovery Highlights Pre‑Urban History

A large indigenous funerary urn was uncovered in January 1896 while opening a grave at the Quarta Parada Cemetery in São Paulo’s eastern zone. The urn, documented by cemetery administrator Bernardino Fernandes in a report to the municipal government, contained the skeletal remains of an adult. After its discovery the piece was transferred by municipal authorities to the State Museum, where the bones were later removed from the collection.

The find provides evidence that the area was used for indigenous burial practices long before the cemetery’s establishment and the city’s urban expansion.
