São Tomé and Príncipe holds legislative and regional elections

São Tomé and Príncipe held legislative, local, and regional elections on September 27, 2026. International observers from the EU and CPLP reported a peaceful and orderly voting process, despite some reports of low voter turnout and slight delays in the opening of certain polling stations.

Preliminary results and political reactions have emerged as the country awaits official tallies. Américo Barros, leader of the Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe (MLSTP), claimed victory, stating the party was “close to an absolute majority” with over 26 seats. He promised a government focused on economic transformation and social support.

Conversely, Américo Ramos, Prime Minister and leader of the Ação Democrática Independente (ADI), expressed confidence in a victory for his party while remaining open to forming a broad governance base. Meanwhile, Levy Nazaré, president of the Movimento Basta, announced his resignation following the elections, noting the party failed to achieve its growth objectives despite electing two deputies.
