São Tomé and Príncipe increases minimum pension to 1,400 dobras

The government of São Tomé and Príncipe has announced an increase in the minimum pension from 1,200 to 1,400 dobras, effective September with retroactive payments dating back to July. The measure, representing a 16.7% increase, is expected to benefit approximately 6,500 pensioners.

Prime Minister Américo Ramos announced the decision during a visit to the National Social Security Institute (INSS). He stated that the increase aims to improve the income of pensioners while ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the Social Security fund. Ramos also emphasized the need for structural improvements, including the modernization of services through digitalization and the recruitment of more competent technical staff.

This marks the second increase in the minimum pension during the current legislature, following a previous rise from 1,000 to 1,200 dobras in January 2025. The announcement comes ahead of the legislative, regional, and municipal elections scheduled for September 27.
