São Tomé and Príncipe leaders propose economic growth strategies

As legislative elections approach in São Tomé and Príncipe, political leaders are presenting economic recovery strategies for the 2026–2030 period. Prime Minister Américo Ramos, leader of the Ação Democrática Independente (ADI), stated that the national economy must accelerate its growth from the current 1% to 2% range to a target exceeding 3% or 4% annually.

Ramos highlighted progress in stabilizing the energy sector through generators and the construction of the country’s largest solar park. By December, solar panels and batteries are expected to meet approximately 50% of current energy needs. He also identified water distribution and climate change impacts on groundwater as critical challenges, alongside the need for improved healthcare infrastructure.

In a separate economic proposal, Abnildo d’Oliveira introduced the ‘Nossa Terra’ framework for 2026–2030. The plan aims to reduce external dependency and economic vulnerability by boosting national production, improving investment conditions, and creating employment. The strategy focuses on transforming the economy to increase domestic value creation and productive capacity.
