MLSTP wins narrow victory in São Tomé and Príncipe elections

The Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe (MLSTP) has emerged as the winner in São Tomé and Príncipe’s legislative elections, securing 24 of the 55 available seats. This narrow victory places them one seat ahead of the ruling Ação Democrática Independente (ADI), which obtained 23 seats. Because no party reached the 28-seat threshold for an absolute majority, political alliances will be necessary to form a government.

The elections were marked by a record-breaking voter abstention rate of 62.92%, the highest ever recorded in the country. This surge in non-participation followed an appeal to abstain by former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. Observers from the CPLP and OIF described the voting process as free, transparent, and peaceful, noting significant female participation in both polling stations and candidate lists.

However, the European Union observation mission raised concerns regarding the potential politicization of the judiciary and the independence of the Constitutional Court. They also highlighted issues regarding campaign finance transparency and the need for more effective judicial recourse. Additionally, the elections highlighted ongoing socio-economic challenges, including high rates of youth emigration due to limited professional opportunities.
