São Tomé and Príncipe prepares for triple elections

São Tomé and Príncipe is set to hold simultaneous legislative, municipal, and regional elections this Sunday. President Carlos Vila Nova has issued an appeal to citizens to participate heavily at the polls, emphasizing that voting is a civic duty essential for strengthening the republic and transforming reality. He specifically urged political parties to respect the will of the people and called for transparency and responsibility from the National Electoral Commission, security forces, and the media.

The upcoming vote is a critical moment for the parliamentary regime, which is often cited as a democratic model in Africa. Approximately 146,000 voters, including the diaspora, are expected to participate. A central issue driving the political discourse is the economic future of the nation, particularly regarding youth unemployment and the exodus of young people seeking better opportunities. Voters have expressed a need for increased investment, job creation, and infrastructure improvements, such as new ports and airports.

Competing for the 55 seats in parliament are several political formations, including the ruling Ação Democrática Independente (ADI) and the Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe (MLSTP).
