São Tomé and Príncipe targets global tourism while Madeira expands forest police

Prime Minister Américo Ramos has identified tourism as a vital pillar for the sustainable development of São Tomé and Príncipe. Speaking at a forum for National Tourism Day, Ramos emphasized the archipelago's potential to become a premier regional and global destination by leveraging its natural and cultural assets, including exotic beaches, tropical forests, and endemic biodiversity.

The country's recent designation as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve supports its image as a secure, authentic, and green destination. Under the National Sustainable Development Strategy 2026-2040, tourism is positioned as a strategic sector for economic diversification and poverty reduction. Recent data indicates the sector contributes approximately 11% to the national product.

In Madeira, Portugal, the Forest Police Corps (CPF) has expanded its force by 36 new members, bringing the total to 100 personnel across 25 posts. Regional Secretary Eduardo Jesus stated the reinforcement aims to increase intervention and protection capabilities, noting that two-thirds of the territory holds protected or reserve status. The CPF focuses on inspection and fire prevention, having issued 281 fines for various infractions between January and August.
