Soňa Červená, acclaimed Czech opera singer and actress, dies at 97

Renowned Czech mezzosoprano and actress Soňa Červená has passed away at the age of 97. Born in Prague in 1925, she achieved international acclaim for her operatic performances, appearing on major stages worldwide and even finding success in East Berlin.

Červená began her career in theater following World War II and made her film debut in 1947 in the comedy ‘Polední mohykán’ alongside Jaroslav Marvan. Throughout her career, she received several prestigious honors, including the Thálie Award, the Artis Bohamiae Amicis prize, and the Medal of Merit. She was also an honorary citizen of Prague. Her legacy is further recognized in astronomy, as an asteroid (26897) is named in her honor.

Her personal life was marked by significant challenges, including the impact of World War II on her family and the emigration of her first husband, František Slabý, to Canada. She later shared a long-term relationship with an orchestra manager, which lasted 30 years.
