Soacha declares public calamity following heavy rainfall
The municipality of Soacha, Cundinamarca, has declared a state of public calamity due to emergencies caused by heavy rains. The declaration, issued via Decree 119 of 2026 by Mayor Julián Sánchez, aims to mobilize resources to address flooding, overflows, drainage obstructions, erosion, and road damage.
Since October 14, authorities have responded to more than 100 emergencies and removed approximately 980 cubic meters of mud and debris. The measure allows for the hiring of specialized machinery, such as suction vehicles, winches, and motor pumps, to clear sediment and waste from channels and sewer networks.
The emergency response focuses on 32 critical points across six communes, including Compartir, Ciudad Latina, Ciudadela Sucre, Cazucá, and Quintanares. A permanent Unified Command Post (PMU) has been established to monitor the situation and coordinate interventions.
