SOCAN to Acquire Canada’s CMRRA from SoundExchange
SOCAN and SoundExchange have signed a purchase agreement under which SOCAN will acquire the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA), pending regulatory approval. The deal aims to streamline reproduction‑rights services for music publishers and creators in Canada by combining SOCAN’s century‑long leadership in performing‑rights administration with CMRRA’s more than 50 years of specialized expertise. SOCAN CEO Jennifer Brown said the acquisition will provide a smoother experience for publishers and creators, while SoundExchange President Michael Huppe highlighted the decade of investment that modernised CMRRA’s operations. Both parties expect the integration to strengthen Canada’s music‑rights ecosystem and support long‑term growth for songwriters, composers, artists, and rights owners.
