Social and ecological movements call for reform in France and Réunion

The Alliance Écologique et Sociale (AES), a collective of trade unions and ecological organizations, has released a manifesto calling for a protective ecology. The group advocates for a social and ecological transition that addresses the needs of workers and the environment simultaneously. Their proposal includes a 70 billion euro financing plan focused on five key priorities: employment, public services, transportation, health, and housing.

In Réunion, social unrest is escalating due to concerns over the cost of living, social justice, and declining living standards. Protesters, primarily high school students, are highlighting poor study conditions and uncertain futures. The region faces significant challenges including high unemployment, low wages, and inadequate housing. Tensions have been further exacerbated by reports of police brutality and a high number of police custody cases.
