Social businesses in Brazil leverage technology for profit and purpose

Research and industry leaders are highlighting the growing role of social businesses in Brazil, specifically how they integrate profit with social purpose through shared value creation strategies. A study led by Alexandre de Araújo Gomes Júnior from the Federal University of Campina Grande examines how enterprises in the education and technology sectors balance financial sustainability with social impact, particularly when serving low-income populations or individuals with special needs.

Industry experts, including iFood CEO Diego Barreto and Gastromotiva co-founder David Hertz, suggest that technology is shifting social impact from simple philanthropy to structured business models that generate income and attract private capital. Barreto notes that digital platforms and connectivity allow individuals in remote areas to access markets and generate income, citing iFood’s role in supporting delivery workers and small businesses. Similarly, Hertz emphasizes using technology to organize social gastronomy networks to connect supply and demand more efficiently.
